After installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 the Universal Access Device (UAD) cannot be used via IEEE1394 (FireWire®). What can I do?

After installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 following scenario can be observed after connection Universal Access Device (UAD) to the IEEE1394 (Firewire®) bus:

  • Universal Access Device (UAD) will be detected by Windows XP hardware device wizard. The entry "pls IEEE1394 debugging device" will be added to the device tree.
  • After 4 seconds the entry "pls IEEE 1394 debugging device" will removed again from device tree.
  • Universal Debug Engine cannot communicate with Universal Access Device via IEEE1394 (Firewire®) connection.
Problem Solution
  1. Get the latest UDE version ( UDE V1.10.05 or higher )
  2. Decide , if you are able to connect to Universal Access Device via printer port:
Universal Access Device can connected via printer port
    1. Install Universal Debug Engine version V1.10.5 or higher.
    2. Try to connect UDE to your target via printer ports connection
    3. Increase the UDE trace output level to maximum ( menu "Config" -> "Debug Server Configuration" -> page "Debug Server" -> slider of "Debug Trace Level" to Report all messages )
    4. Close current workspace
    5. Start eppsetup.exe from UDE root directory
    6. Click on button "Test UAD"
    7. The text box "Communication Device" of Dialog "UAD Function successful" displays the string "Universal Access Device, Hardware Revision C Loader version 2.5.0"
    8. Disconnect UAD from printer port and connect it to IEEE1394 (Firewire®) bus
    9. The entry "pls IEEE 1394 debugging device" remains in device tree
    10. Now you are ready to use UAD via IEEE1394 (Firewire®) connection with Windows XP SP2

Universal Access Device cannot connected via printer port
    1. Uninstall Windows XP2 SP2.
    2. Install Universal Debug Engine version V1.10.5 or higher
    3. Try to connect UDE to your target via IEEE1394 (Firewire®) connection ( Windows XP SP1 or Windows 2000 )
    4. Increase the UDE trace output level to maximum ( menu "Config" -> "Debug Server Configuration" -> page "Debug Server" -> slider of "Debug Trace Level" to Report all messages )
    5. Close current workspace
    6. Open device manager
    7. Open "Universal Debug Engine" property dialog ( member of "pls IEEE 1394 debugging device" class )
    8. Select property page Hardware
    9. The text box "Loader version" displays the string "2.5.0, HW type: C"
    10. Install Windows XP SP2 again
    11. The entry "pls IEEE1394 debugging device" remains in device tree
    12. Now you are ready to use UAD via IEEE1394 (Firewire®) connection with Windows XP SP2
  1. If both cases cannot be used, please update UAD firmware loader version to 2.5.0 on another PC or contact the pls Support Team ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it )
